Publix to increase recycling via composting
While I was surfing around reading about the latest green trends, I stumbled across this post. Apparently, Publix, a supermarket chain popular in my home state of Florida, is increasing their recycling rate from 42% to 80%. Stores in Broward County are partnering with Organic Recovery to recover food waste, and the waste will be composted and turned into fertilizer. Since Publix is my supermarket of choice, this was particularly exciting news for me, and I’m hoping stores throughout the rest of the state follow suit.
Speaking of reclaiming waste, composting is an excellent way to become more eco-friendly on the homefront. Here are two great ways:
1. Yard waste, ie leaves and grass clippings, can be composted and turned into fertilizer. Lowe’s has a nice little instruction sheet for building a two-box system, something you can do on a Saturday afternoon. See here. There are plenty of other designs out there for the DIY’er, so don’t be afraid to search around if you’re seriously thinking about making your own compost bin.
2. Purchase a residential backyard composter from a variety of sites to dispose of your kitchen scraps. This saves on the amount of garbage you’re sending to the city dump and ALSO makes fresh fertilizer for your yard. You can find solid composters for a couple of hundred bucks or less. Browse through the composter section of the Greenhousemegastore to get an idea.
